Over the past decade, cheerleading has grown by leaps and bounds. More colleges are adding cheerleading, or STUNT and acro programs than ever before, and more importantly- scholarships. 6925_505473881271_4253937_n

If your child is considering cheering at the college level, or just wants to improve their stunting skills in general, a college clinic is a valuable resource.

Every year area colleges hold Stunt Clinics to recruit new talent and teach the basics of stunting (as well as intermediate and advanced skills) to help prepare athletes for tryouts. Many of these clinics are open to students in high school only, but some have opened their clinics up to start at as young as the Kindergarten level and are used a fundraiser for the college squads and a way to foster a love for cheerleading in the younger generation.

Our favorite clinic to attend is the one held at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. It is held twice per year and participants learn all girl and co-ed partner stunting, as well as tumbling. Plus they all get the opportunity to try flying (which is definitely an added bonus). They work directly with the coaches and cheerleaders from the BGSU squads. It has always been a positive experience for the team and they return home with new skills and technique and share it with those unable to attend, so in the end all of the kids benefit from the clinic as a whole.

Our teams love working with the college team members and look up to them too. They are patient with them and have an excellent way of communicating with them.

Some helpful tips in choosing the college clinic right for your athletes:

– Look for a clinic that teaches stunting for ALL positions. Some clinics only focus on flying, which is a great asset for your flyers but not helpful for your squad as a whole.
– Check the ages and levels taught. At BGSU, they break cheerleaders up into groups based on levels for more individualized instruction.. Some clinics may only push the higher levels skills. Buidling a proper foundation first is a neccessity, so if you have a younger or lower level squad be sure to ask if they will have instruction for these levels.

If you feel this is something that would benefit your child and/or their squad, contact your local university for more information.
