During the winter months when life slows down a bit around here, my daughter and I enjoy making handmade cards to give to others. During a time when snail mail is becoming more and more a thing of the past, what a special way to show someone you care by taking the time and effort to make a handmade customized card just for them! This is great when you want to give your coach a special thank you, or maybe a parent who has went above and beyond, or a cheerleader when they achieve a new skill.

First you will need some supplies. All of these items can be purchased at your local retailer or craft store.

Suggested Supply List:

  • Blank greeting card or card stock and envelope
  • Pretty paper to line the inside (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Craft bond adhesive squares, double-sided
  • Confetti
  • Clipart
  • Poem or quote
  • Items to decorate card such as; ribbon, foam stickers, stickers, stamps, stencils
  • Sharpie Pen or markers
  • Memorable snapshots (optional)

1. First you will need to choose the style of card you wish to use, or prepare your card stock by carefullly folding it in half and making a firm crease.

2. Using a blank piece of paper, draw out a rough sketch of how you envision your finished card. Take this time to search out clip art online to get some ideas. Once you find the clipart you wish to use, print it off on and cut it to size.

3. Search out quotes or poems to be used on the inside of your card. I will include some sample poems at quotes at the end of this article. Once you have selected one, type it up in the desired font. Print and cut to size. You may wish to layer your poem on additional cardstock, or add a border.

4. If you are choosing to line the inside of your card, measure and cut your decorative paper to size. We like using prism paper because it isn't too thick and it gives the card a lot of sparkle on the inside.

5. Using your craft bond adhesive squares, carefully attach your prism paper to the inside left of the card (or the inside top if using a card that opens horizontally).

6. Next attach your main graphic/clipart to the front of the card.

7. Attach your poem or quote on the inside left (or inside top) of the card.

8. Write a special handwritten message on the inside right (or inside bottom) of the card and sign your name. Allow several minutes for the marker to dry to prevent smudging.

9. Choose the items you feel will best accessorize your card. Prior to gluing or sticking, place them on your card and move them around until you find the proper placement.

10. Carefully attach/glue/stick your accessories onto their chosen places on your card. Allow your card several hours to fully dry.

11. Address the envelope and place your card inside.

12. For an extra special touch, I like to add some confetti to the inside of the envelope. Seal it up and you are all set to stamp it and drop it off at the Post Office.
