1. A song comes on the radio from an old routine and you mentally bust out your dance in your head, or physically if you are in the safety of your living room. Alone. With the blinds closed.

2. Your body creaks and aches like an 80 year old and you have a ‘routine’ just to get out of bed without further injuring yourself.

3. Random walls still mean opportunities for handstands.usetobe1

4. You still have uniforms tucked away in a closet that you just couldn’t part with, and maybe a few pair of poms as well.

5. A trampoline always means the opportunity to see if you can still do a killer toe touch and maybe even if you are feeling brave- a back tuck.

6. You find yourself scanning ESPN looking for cheer coverage of Worlds or Nationals.

7. Every now and then it’s important to do a flexibility check to see if you can still do the splits on your good side, a heel stretch, and an attempt at a scorpion that usually winds up looking like a weak scale because your back just doesn’t quite bend that way anymore.

8. You get your stunting fix by bribing your kids to stunt with you, or by getting your old cheer buddies together for pool stunting or bed pyramids, and you use your yoga blocks for hitting your flyer positions (which are usually limited to libs and arabesques).

9. Working out is still a huge priority and you still have playlists with cheer music for those days when you need that extra motivation (you hope no one notices your motions and shimmies as you pedal along in your own little world on that stationary bike in the corner of the gym).

10. You eagerly participate in the crowd leading chants at football games from the stands, maybe a little too eagerly.

11. Glitter and bling? Still obsessed.

12. You still count things off 5-6-7-8.

13. You still lounge in Soffe shorts, Nike Pros, and old competition t-shirts.

14. Binge watching a ‘Bring It On’ marathon and reliving your glory days is nothing out of the ordinary.

15. If the conversation comes up of cheerleading being a sport, you find yourself quickly roped into defending it and still feel a twinge of hurt when people don’t understand the work and dedication that goes into the sport you love.
